Qualifications

What are OTHM qualifications?

What the awarding organisation behind your qualification actually does, and what regulation does and does not promise.

If you are looking at a course and the words "OTHM Level 3" appear next to it, that tells you something specific about what you would be studying and who stands behind it. This guide explains what OTHM is, what Ofqual regulation does and does not mean, and how to check any of it for yourself.

What OTHM is

OTHM is an awarding organisation. It does not teach anyone. It designs qualifications, sets the standards for them, approves the centres that deliver them, and issues the certificates. The teaching is done by colleges, training providers and online schools that OTHM has approved, which is where Digital Marketing School sits.

It was established in 2003 and is based in the UK. Its qualifications run from Level 3 to Level 8 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework, across subjects including business, management, information technology, health and social care, logistics, and tourism.

That division matters when something goes wrong. If you have a question about teaching, you ask your provider. If you have a question about the qualification itself, how it is assessed or whether your certificate is valid, that sits with the awarding organisation.

What Ofqual regulation actually means

OTHM is regulated by Ofqual, the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation, under recognition number RN5284. It has been recognised since April 2010. You can confirm that yourself on the Ofqual register of regulated qualifications, which lists every recognised awarding organisation and every qualification it offers.

Being regulated means three practical things.

  • The qualification has a number and sits at a defined level, so a university or an employer can look up exactly what it involved rather than taking anyone's word for it.
  • The awarding organisation has to meet published conditions covering assessment, standards and how it handles problems.
  • Ofqual can act when those conditions are not met, and it publishes what it does.

It is worth being clear about what regulation is not. It is not a guarantee of quality in the teaching you receive, which is your provider's responsibility rather than Ofqual's. It is not a promise that any particular employer or university will accept the qualification, because those are their own decisions. And it is not a one-off badge. It is ongoing oversight, which means enforcement happens.

Regulation in practice

In July 2026 Ofqual fined OTHM £25,000 and recovered costs, after OTHM admitted failures between 2021 and 2024 in how it handled allegations of malpractice. The findings included allowing centres accused of malpractice to investigate themselves. OTHM remains a recognised awarding organisation and its qualifications remain regulated. The details are published on GOV.UK.

We have included this because a page explaining what regulation means would be a poor guide if it left out what regulation looks like when it is used. If you are choosing where to study, the useful conclusion is not that regulation is meaningless. It is that regulation is a process with consequences, that the record is public, and that you are entitled to look at it before you enrol anywhere.

How OTHM levels compare

OTHM qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework, which Ofqual uses in England and CCEA uses in Northern Ireland. Wales runs its own framework, the Credit and Qualifications Framework for Wales, which has the same nine levels and the same level descriptors. Scotland uses the SCQF, whose credit points are a different unit.

Where OTHM levels sit on the RQF
LevelRoughly comparable to
Level 3A Levels
Level 4First year of a bachelor's degree
Level 5Second year of a bachelor's degree
Level 6Final year of a bachelor's degree
Level 7Master's degree

Comparable is doing real work in that table. A Level 4 qualification is set at the same level of demand as the first year of a degree. It is not the same thing as having completed a year of a degree, and no university is obliged to treat it that way. Whether a particular qualification counts towards a particular course is always that university's decision.

What Digital Marketing School offers

We deliver three OTHM qualifications, all at Level 3 and all taught online:

They differ in size, so check the credit value and the guided learning hours on each course page rather than assuming they are equivalent. We do not offer qualifications at Level 4 or above, and we do not offer HNCs, HNDs or degrees. If you see us described as offering those, it is wrong.

A Level 3 qualification is one route towards higher education at Level 4 and above. Whether any particular provider accepts it for entry is that provider's decision, so ask them directly before you enrol with us on that basis.

How to check any of this yourself

You do not have to take a provider's word for its own claims, and you should not have to.

  • Search the Ofqual register for the qualification title. It will show the level, the credit value and the awarding organisation.
  • Check the qualification number on the course page against the register. If they do not match, ask why.
  • If a provider claims a university will accept the qualification, ask that university.

Those three checks take a few minutes and apply to any provider, including this one.
